Preview Party & Fundraiser - “Create Our Own Masterpieces” October 17, 2015

The South Pasadena Arts Council has been working with the City of South Pasadena to develop the “Box Art” project, utilizing the City’s traffic signal boxes as canvases. Ten artists will be selected this summer to contribute to the SPARC curated public art installation.
The artists’ designs will be exhibited at an Artists Preview Party & Fundraiser - “Create Our Own Masterpieces” Co-hosted by Doug & Cara Yokomizo and the Watsondesigngroup, on October 17th, 2015 at the home of Doug & Cara Yokomizo.
There will be Sponsorship opportunities for each of the 10 boxes, a live auction, cocktails and entertainment. The public art project and painting of the boxes will take place during the final two weeks of October.
Funds raised at this event will be used to develop future opportunities for artists to create public art installations throughout South Pasadena enhancing our Downtown Business District and neighborhoods. The public art installation SPARC’s “Box Art” project is a creative community initiative and will be appreciated by our residents, business owners and visitors to the City.
Mark you calendars and SAVE THE DATE for Saturday, October 17, and join us at this exciting, creative and entertaining event!

SPARC Gallery Exhibition/Concert: “Berlin" photographs by Diane Meyer July 16-Aug 28,2015

Opening Reception –Saturday, July 18th, 5:00-7:00 pm

Tisa Adamson and Friends Concert – 7:30 – 9:00 pm

The South Pasadena Arts Council (SPARC), as part of the next South Pasadena Arts Crawl, is pleased to present our next exhibition in the SPARC Gallery of the work of Diane Meyer. As part of the Arts Crawl event we will also present a special concert, featuring local singer/songwriter Tisa Adamson and Friends.
Diane Meyer is an Assistant Professor of Photography at Loyola Marymount University and an artist who works within various photographic genres to explore the physical, social and psychological qualities that make up various locations.
Her work has been exhibited in solo exhibitions at AIR Gallery, NYC; the 18th Street Arts Center, Santa Monica; the Society for Contemporary Photography, Kansas City and in various national and international group shows.
The exhibition at the SPARC Gallery, will feature work she created while an artist-in-residence in Berlin, where she took pictures of the city and its suburbs, tracing the path of the Berlin Wall in places where only hints of its existence remained. Fascinated by the loaded psychology of these sites and the incomplete ways in which we remember them, she pixilated parts of her original photographs and overlayed them with delicate multi-hued embroidery. Meyers meticulous stitching pierces the photograph as it simultaneously heals and conceals the historic fabric to which it alludes.
Tisa Adamson is a music and art prodigy born from Greek and Mexican parents and is a native of Southern California. She has been playing music since she was 8 years old. In her early years she opened for Romeo Void, X, Motels, Fear and others. She later went on to play as part of a duo with Che Zuro for 15 years. Recently she has been writing, singing and performing with local musicians and friends Brie Darling and Randy Mitchel.
She will be performing songs from her recently released CD, “Fingers”.

UNRAVEL: Interactive Performance by Jane Brucker

For her community project, Jane Brucker will present an interactive performance titled Unravel, on Tuesday, May 12. There will be one free workshop,  from 7 - 8:30 pm. The workshop will be limited to eight (8) participants. The performance will take place at Playhouse Pilates, 1000 Fremont Ave. South Pasadena.

Unravel Performance: Jane Brucker would like to invite participants to become part of her ongoing performance project Unravel.  This work centers on the activities of doing, undoing, and redoing. Hand-knit blankets, sweaters, shawls, and vests are taken apart and/or re-created in a process that mirrors the compromise and change inherent in life.  Using her expertise as a certified teacher of the Alexander Technique, participants will be led through the activity of unraveling, allowing them to meditate on a change of mind or heart while letting go of habitual tension. The Unravel process ultimately is evident in the installations Brucker creates incorporating the reworked and reconstructed pieces into solo and participatory installations and performances.

SPARC and The Special Olympics

This summer the City of South Pasadena is one of several host cities for the 2015 Special Olympics held here in Los Angeles. The organizing committee has asked SPARC to assist in this project by asking for volunteers to work with the athletes ( from Paraguay and Morocco) on a special art project led by South Pasadena Artist Val Trimarchi.  In addition we’ve included a list of art supplies and a description for the project. The project will take place on July 23rd at Garfield Park. We are also asking if anyone is able to contribute to or donate art supplies need (from the list).

The Organizing Committee is on a short timeframe to get this project organized and ready for the athletes, so if any of our SPARC members are interested in participating, please contact me ASAP and I will forward your information and level of participation to the project organizers.

This is a great opportunity for SPARC and our members to be part of a wonderful community effort to support these special Olympic Athletes.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.  Please contact me at the email address below.

Thank you in advance for your willingness to participate.
